Micro-Volunteering and Community Outreach

We will occasionally put a call out to the membership to help staff a local event. We call these opportunities "micro-volunteering" because they are small, one-off activities that don't necessarily involve a long-term commitment. We also have a few volunteers who participate directly in running the chapter on a long-term basis doing tasks that require very little time per month, including listserv moderation and managing our Therapy Groups List ad placements. We very much appreciate our members who serve in these ways.

We are also open to suggestions for projects or activities that you want to run or organize! For example, a member hosted a movie night in their home and invited Marin CAMFT members to discuss the themes of the film from the psychotherapist perspective after. If you have an idea of something you would like to lead that will benefit the profession or the local community, you can always let us know by sending an email to info@marincamft.org.

Join a Committee

Marin CAMFT has a variety of committees organized around specific initiatives, all of which are open to new members. Members should be sure they are subscribed to the Marin CAMFT listserv, where announcements for these committees' meetings and activities are often posted.

Trauma Resources Team

Current Co-Chairs: Kathleen Ries & Katharine Spencer

The Trauma Resources Team (TRT) is a long-running committee within the chapter, originally organized around community response to disaster such as earthquakes. The TRT supports Marin CAMFT members with trauma-related education, resources, and support groups, including consultation groups, speakers, and book groups. The Trauma Resource Team meets on Zoom on the third Friday of the month at 12pm. Please see the TRT page for full details including who to contact for the Zoom link.

CE Committee

Current Chair: Arianna Sifuentes

Want to help decide which Continuing Education trainings and workshops we bring into Marin CAMFT? Come join our CE Committee! The CE Committee meets quarterly (just 4x per year) for 1-1.5 hours and supports the Programs Director-at-Large and President in deciding which speakers and trainers to bring to our community. Email programs@marincamft.org for more information.

Scholarship Committee

Current Chair: OPEN

Each year, we give out three scholarships ($1,000 each!) as part of our Kristina Carey Scholarship. Kristina was an active Marin CAMFT member who died in February 2017. We award one scholarship to a Trainee MFT, one to an Associate MFT, and one to an MFT Trainee or MFT Associate who identifies as belonging to an underrepresented group in the mental health field (example: BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Neurodiverse, etc.). The Scholarship Committee works seasonally, mostly in Fall and Winter. We invite you to join the Scholarship Committee to help promote the scholarship and select its recipients! Email community@marincamft.org to get connected with this fun initiative.

Inclusivity Committee

Current Chair: Hamaseh Kianfar

The Inclusivity Committee helps drive Marin CAMFT's implementation of education and programming to support the ongoing work of increasing equity, inclusion, and belonging within our organization and our work as mental health clinicians serving a vast variety of populations and experiences. The Inclusivity Committee holds monthly meetings online and in-person to identify and promote CE programming, community events, and other opportunities that highlight the diversity of identities and experiences in Marin County. Please connect with the Inclusivity Chair at inclusivity@marincamft.org to find out more.

Present on a Special Interest/Clinical Topic

If you are interested in presenting to the Marin CAMFT community, we are always on the lookout for future presenters to share their knowledge with other members. Many of the presentations offered through our continuing education programming have been by Marin CAMFT members who are expert in their fields. We also sometimes offer workshops or talks for knowledge-sharing by our members where no CEs are awarded. If you have a topic that you feel would be of interest, you can find out more about the process here.

We are always looking for good presenters! You can also help the chapter by suggesting a speaker to us. If you know of someone else you would like to put us in touch with, or an idea for a topic you would like us to explore for a future seminar, please send an email to our Director of Programs at programs@marincamft.org.

Join the Marin CAMFT Board of Directors

We have a wide variety of roles on our board, with different lengths of service and different types of tasks involved:

The terms are staggered on alternating years, so that not all offices are vacant at once, which means that only certain positions are available each year. Check our Fall Newsletter for the latest information on openings in the current cycle. Pre-licensed members may hold all board positions apart from President, Past-President and President-Elect.

Those interested in becoming a board member are encouraged to send an email to president@marincamft.org to make a connection and have a conversation around the role.

Each fall we collect information from interested candidates and prepare a ballot for members to vote in November. All candidates must be current members in good standing of Marin CAMFT and state CAMFT.  Most people who run are elected, and if elected, your new term would begin on January 1st. As a testament to the positive experience, many board members have ended up serving for multiple terms or taking on different roles: Four years of service, sometimes even longer, is quite common, though this length of service is certainly not expected nor required.

The best part of being on the board of MCAMFT is the community. The amount of time that is put in does not equal the positive benefits of being a board member of MCAMFT. It is wonderful to get to know our therapist community at large and be a part of something bigger here in Marin County, and the larger CAMFT community. The discussions and relationships formed on the board are invaluable, and everyone is kind, caring, and intelligent. We laugh, too. And get delicious pastries when we meet in person a few times a year.

Board Positions

Executive Board Roles

President-Elect

We recruit a new candidate into this role every year. The President-Elect role is the first year of a three-year commitment of service in leadership for the chapter. After the first year as President-Elect, the officer succeeds into the President position the following year, and then into the Past President seat the year after.

While this three-year service may sound daunting, it comes with a lot of support across the organization. The length of the term allows for you to get comfortable and familiar with the bylaws and needs of the organization. Having the Past President still involved also makes the position of President feel very supported when the time comes. Please read this testimonial by 2024/2026 President Lauren Ogren on her experience.

The time ask, especially for President Elect and Past President, is not overwhelming. (Duties may be more involved as President, as you would expect.) There is a monthly meeting on the second Friday of the month (11 times a year; we take July off). Outside tasks are generally an hour to two a week, as needed.

These roles tend to get a lot of emails, so much of the job is being available to respond to chapter business and internal discussions among the board that are handled there. We use dedicated chapter email addresses on our @marincamft.org domain, so you won't need to use your own email account, which can help with protecting boundaries and to manage your time.

Secretary
Drafts agendas and keeps the minutes for monthly board meetings, and otherwise makes sure we're staying organized and in compliance as a non-profit organization. Two-year position.

The Secretary produces the agenda and minutes for each board meeting, and works with our web admin to get documents posted online. The Secretary interfaces with State CAMFT occasionally on board matters and sharing rosters. This role also supports the chapter by facilitating bylaws reviews and updates when needed, and by collaborating across the board to keep the chapter handbook up to date to support on-boarding of new board members in January each year.

As an officer position, the Secretary is on the Executive Board and works with the President, President-Elect, Past President, and Treasurer on key decisions for the chapter, and therefore attends both the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a to 11:00a) as well as the monthly Executive Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 8:30a-9:00a).

President
This is year 2 of the presidential commitment: After serving a year as President-Elect, you will step into your leadership year (no additional election required; this succession happens automatically).

As President, you will help guide the ship.

You will lead the team of Board Members each month in addressing the needs of our members and our organization. You will help oversee and work closely with our Inclusivity committee, and will be the point person to interface and represent our chapter with State CAMFT. Occasionally the President may step in to host a continuing education event in support of the Programs Chair. The President typically will be expected to attend chapter networking or social activities, though it is not required to be at every one. The President will host the Annual Membership Meeting which is currently held in the Fall each year. The President meets once a month with the Executive Board and once a month with the entire Board, with varying tasks in between. The President collaborates with the President Elect and is supported by the Past President.

Past President
This is the third year of service, and as before, succession into this new position occurs automatically without requiring another election. The Past President moves into a mentoring and supporting role for the incoming President. For example, if the President is unavailable to attend a board meeting, the Past President would be their designee to do so instead (if the Past President is also not available, the President Elect or another officer of the board can also step in).

The Past President tends to have fewer responsibilities after the beginning of the year, as the new President becomes fully established in their duties over time, though the Past President is always welcome to stay more involved based on interest and capacity for ongoing engagement with board functions.

Treasurer
The Treasurer supports the financial operations of the chapter. Two-year position.

The Treasurer monitors the overall financial health and wellbeing of the organization. With support from our accountant, the Treasurer oversees the books and records of accounts of the investments and business transactions of the Chapter and produces financial reports. The Treasurer manages the chapter credit card and is therefore the one to assist with purchases and reimbursements for expenses. The Treasurer assists with financials sent to State CAMFT, makes sure the chapter’s insurance policy is paid, signs checks, and works with the full board to set budgets for each calendar year. The Treasurer tracks deposits and makes sure checks are received from sponsors or other payers. The Treasurer manages any investments of chapter reserves. The Treasurer uploads monthly budgets onto our shared drive so that board members have access to review revenue and expenses.

As an officer position, the Treasurer is part of the Executive Board along with the President, President-Elect, Past President, and Secretary, who collaborate on key decisions for the chapter. The Treasurer attends both the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a to 11:00a) and monthly Executive Board meetings directly before (8:30a to 9:00a).

Directors at Large Roles

Director of Membership
Manages our membership function and supports our members with questions. This is a 2-year position.

The Director of Membership accesses our online membership system to review applications for membership and ensures member eligibility requirements are met. This role interfaces with our liaison at state CAMFT on membership management questions and state CAMFT membership activity. The Membership Director supports members and prospective members with questions about membership and benefits of the chapter to encourage membership engagement and participation. The Membership Director tracks membership growth and reports to the Board. The Membership Director looks for opportunities for improvement of the member experience, such as reciprocal benefits offered between sister chapters, and facilitates collaborations with other chapters on social activities. This role directly interfaces with all other board positions, including support to the Scholarship Committee, Programs Director, Pre-Licensed Director, and Treasurer.

The Membership Director-at-Large attends the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a-11:00a).

Director of Programs
The Programs Director-at-Large leads the team that decides what events we host for our Marin CAMFT members and the clinician community, reaches out to possible speakers to solicit proposals for review and coordinates scheduling, and hosts trainings on Zoom. Two-year position.

The Programs Director is one of the bigger roles on our Board, and has support from the organization to handle the tasks. The Programs Director manages all of our continuing education programming, including reaching out to possible speakers, reviewing suggestions for speakers that come in from our membership, managing proposal submissions and ensuring CE requirements are met, scheduling the monthly events and supporting speakers to prepare for their presentations.

The Programs Director hosts the monthly CE events, usually on Zoom on the 2nd Friday of each month from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, and sometimes in person in a central location in Marin. Other Board members including the President are available as backup hosts when the Programs Director is unavailable. The Director of Programs also runs the quarterly CE Committee meetings.

The Programs Director-at-Large attends the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a-11:00a).

CAMFT CEPA Provider

Director of Marketing
Identifies and secures opportunities to promote Marin
CAMFT as a chapter. Two-year position.

This role manages outreach and promotion to potential sponsors and businesses, and organizes member networking events. The Marketing Director-at-Large identifies and secures opportunities to promote Marin CAMFT as a chapter, organizes and coordinates in-person events such as the Fall Annual Membership Meeting and Celebration and other networking get-togethers.

The Marketing Director-at-Large attends the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a-11:00a).

Director of Pre-Licensed
This office is specifically for a pre-licensed Marin CAMFT member to participate in the organization at a leadership level. This is a one-year commitment, with the option to run again for a subsequent term.

This role develops and serves Marin CAMFT’s pre-licensed membership. This may involve advocating on behalf of the pre-licensed community within the board where necessary. The Pre-Licensed Director is encouraged to have the impact and pursue projects that reflect their unique personality and goals, with an understanding of the limited capacity that is often available for pre-licensed therapists who are currently in their graduate program and/or seeing clients. Each Director of Pre-Licensed has put their own imprint on the role. There is a standard minimum expectation, but what you do beyond that is largely up to you, and you can choose to continue the work done by previous directors in this role or develop your own initiatives as you see fit. You can propose the board create committees under your position to help with any work you wish to delegate. Subcommittee members will not hold any board-level power, but can be directed by you to do work within your role or give updates to the board as appropriate.

The minimum expectation is:

  • Organize monthly 3,000-Hour Club meetings: The timing and format are up to you. This will involve communicating with the editor to post events on the website for members to sign up. As a board member you can take on as much of the administration of the task as you are comfortable with, or can choose to delegate some of the setup/communication to the editor. Directors are encouraged to take on as much of the administration as possible, as the editor is paid for their work, and where possible we attempt to be conscious of how members' money is utilized.
  • Attend Board Meetings: Board meetings take place monthly on the second Friday of the month. There is a break over the summer. A brief update on the activities of the role is expected. This can be a quick verbal update; no presentation is expected. Virtual attendance is always an option, but in-person attendance is appreciated when it is held in-person.

Director of Community Service
Works directly with our community focused committees. This is a 2-year position.

The Community Service Director-at-Large works directly with our community focused committees including serving as Board liaison with the Scholarship and Trauma Resources Team committees, works with the Marketing Director to promote Marin CAMFT in our community, and seeks to find new ways Marin CAMFT can support and immerse ourselves as an organization within Marin County, for example working with the new Inclusivity Director as they develop that role.

The Community Service Director-at-Large attends the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a-11:00a). This position may also attend the respective committee meetings as needed.

Director of Inclusivity
The Director of Inclusivity advocates for and works to achieve diversity, inclusion, and belonging in Marin CAMFT’s leadership, membership, programming, and projects, and to assist CAMFT in furthering its objective on a local level. The first person to take on this position will shape the role in coordination with the overall Board of Directors and the Inclusivity Committee.

The Inclusivity Director-at-Large leads and supports the Inclusivity Committee in support of the goals and initiatives it defines, and interfaces with other committees and board members to support them in integrating the chapter’s Inclusivity objectives.

The Inclusivity Director-at-Large attends the monthly Board meetings (2nd Friday of each month, 9:00a-11:00a), and hosts the Inclusivity Committee meetings.

Next Steps to Become a Candidate

If you are interested in getting on the ballot for an available board position, we encourage you to connect with our President at president@marincamft.org if you have not already done so, to make a connection and talk further about the role. Then, in order for us to produce our slate of candidates, please provide the following information in an email to info@marincamft.org:

  1. Headshot: JPEG/JPG or PNG at least 500 pixels wide (larger is fine) that features your face. Should be just you, not a group or family shot, though a casual photo is fine and it does not have to be professionally photographed. Color preferred. We may crop or resize to fit the layout.
  2. Professional bio: This is to introduce you to the membership. 1 or 2 paragraphs of your clinical / professional background, specialty, areas of focus, education, or whatever else you care to highlight. You are also invited to include some personal information about yourself if you wish, such as family, where you live, interests or hobbies, etc.
  3. Candidate statement: This is to share why you're a good fit for the role. 1 or 2 paragraphs describing your interest in the position you're running for, which may include any previous experience serving on a board or committee or supporting an organization; any particular skill set that you would bring to the table; how long you've been part of Marin CAMFT or other CAMFT chapters; your motivations or interests for wanting to be involved, or literally anything else you wish to share with our membership about why you would like to volunteer for board service in this way.
