Workshop Description
This workshop came about following a post on the RECAMFT listserv on this topic from Diane Gleim, LMFT. That post was shared with the Marin CAMFT listserv too. This generated a robust discussion among colleagues who expressed concerns and raised questions about technology in the therapy room, which inspired this program to be created. Thank you, Diane, for starting the conversation! RECAMFT members are able to join this Marin CAMFT training for free through the reciprocal benefits between both chapters.
This 2-hour training for therapists offers a practical explanation for how technology works in the world around us, with a focus on everyday devices such as cell phones, home security, and speaker systems that might be listening in on our sessions or tracking our behaviors. Participants will think through the implications of privacy and confidentiality together, and gain concrete guidelines for how to integrate awareness of technology into the therapeutic frame. The training will spell out what therapists' obligations are under the HIPAA Privacy Rule, with specific recommendations for telehealth practice. Using real-world examples, the training will walk through how ambient recording, cloud storage, and data subpoenas may function in practice. A core component of the training focuses on building awareness within clinicians for how specific client populations such as Black and Brown clients, religious minorities such as Muslim clients, or clients with presenting concerns involving experiences of paranoia or even milder distrust, may be differently affected by the realities of surveillance, with emphasis on sensitively offering psychoeducation and informed consent based on client culture and identity.
Educational Goals
This training is designed to increase awareness of the infiltration of surveillance technology into modern life, and the potential impact on privacy and confidentiality in the treatment room. The intention behind this training is to equip therapists with information needed to possibly change their own use of certain technology within the therapeutic space, and give them confidence in speaking with at-risk clients about digital privacy.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Describe the difference between confidentiality and privacy, and explain what a therapist is obligated to protect.
- Identify at least 3 ways that modern technology may be tracking all of us in everyday life, including in the therapy room.
- Name at least 3 specific aspects of client identity, lived experience, or presenting concern to consider before discussing surveillance technologies with clients.
- Explain the topic of digital surveillance to clients and the implications of technology within therapy in a culturally-sensitive way.
