MARIN COUNTY CHAPTER OF CAMFT

FRIDAY LUNCHTIME LECTURE SERIES

Friday, October 14, 2016
Beyond Behavioral Medicine
Larry Berkelhammer, PhD &
Will Meechham, MD

This will be a presentation on Mind-Body Empowerment, which is a mindfulness-based approach leading to the cultivation of loving self-care. Behavioral medicine clients are often non-compliant with the practices taught to them by clinicians. The approach we will be describing dramatically improves self-care compliance as clients begin to cultivate self-compassion and self-caring.

I (Larry Berkelhammer) closed my mind-body medicine practice a couple of years ago to write the book: In Your Own Hands: New Hope for People Living with Chronic Medical Conditions, and to speak to medical audiences at UCSF, Kaiser, SFSU, and elsewhere. After reading Dr. Meecham’s writing on what he calls Mindful Biology last fall, I invited him to begin co-teaching the College of Marin course I created a year earlier. He is a retired physician and creator of Mindful Biology, which is a method by which people learn to appreciate and value the mind-body interface as they learn to come home to living fully in their bodies.

I (Larry) trained in mind-body medicine with James S. Gordon MD at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, O. Carl Simonton MD at the Simonton Cancer Center, and Lawrence LeShan PhD—author of Cancer as a Turning Point.
