Hello and Happy 2022!
I’m a sucker for the symbolism of a new year. Its possibility. Its potential. I’m also a sucker for the space that exists between one thing ending and another thing beginning. Each year I set aside intentional time on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to engage in a ritual of reflection and inquiry to explore my personal and professional path, where growth and new discoveries have occurred, where stuckpoints and roadblocks continue to exist, what I’m curious about and setting towards in the future.
I ended 2021 and am starting 2022 thinking a lot about this organization and our Board of Directors. The passing from 2021 into 2022 has found the Board of Marin CAMFT experiencing significant change. As we said goodbye to 2021, we also said goodbye to three board members who brought unbelievable service and care to this organization.
I would like to share how important each of these individuals has been.
Beth Leib, LMFT had served on the board for 4 years as our Director-At-Large of Community Service. Along with Dee Treshnell, LMFT and Kathleen Ries, LMFT, Beth rebuilt our Trauma Response Team which is now a resource of therapists that the County of Marin calls upon in times of collective crisis to tend to the psychological needs of our community. Beth has always brought so much passion and care to this work. While she is stepping down from her role as a director on the board, she will continue to lead the Trauma Response Team with Kathleen, and we are excited for what comes next with all of their efforts.
Lynne Clyde, LMFT had also served on the board for the past 4 years, notably as Marin CAMFT's President in 2020. She is a graceful, compassionate, and intelligent leader who got our organization through the toughest year it had faced - putting out the proverbial fires that continued to show up one after another, and helping to seamlessly transition our entire organization into one that operates virtually. She continued to serve us as Past President through 2021. It cannot be stated enough how integral to this organization Lynne has been. She is a light and a wonder, and one hell of a rock star on the side!
Pat Saunders, LMFT has served on the board for more years than I can count. She is this organization. Most all of us know her, and when you know her, you love her. Having served as President twice earlier in the past decade, she closed out her tenure of participation on the board carrying quite a lot of weight, as both our 2021 Secretary, and as Director-At-Large of Programs and Continuing Education. She, along with Lynne, also very much felt like a co-president for me this past year. If I had a dollar for every email I sent Pat with a variety of organizational questions, I would have too many dollars. And each time I asked for support, she offered it with grace, experience, compassion, and humor. I will try not to email her this year.
I thank each of you three deeply for what you have offered this organization, and look forward to continuing our friendships for the years to come!

She joined the team last year and we are so excited to have her with us this year as well! Some of you have seen Lisa host a few of our events. I’m excited for even more of you to get to know her and her work.
I also want to thank the Scholarship Committee including Elaine McMahon, LMFT, Suzanne Alfandari, LMFT, Dorie Rosenberg, LMFT, and Marty Frankel, LMFT, for the work they put in supporting our pre-licensed members through the Kristina M. Carey Scholarship Fund. In addition, much appreciation to Renee Owen, LMFT who manages our Therapy Groups List on the website (which you'll also see included at the bottom of this newsletter) and to Susan Pease Gadoua, LCSW who moderates the Marin CAMFT listserv (not subscribed to the listserv? learn more here!). All of these people are helping keep this chapter going.
I am so excited to have each of these folks literally on board and can’t wait to see what we do together.

I have been so honored to have worked with such a wonderful team of colleagues over the past 4 years, serving as Membership Director 2018-2019, 2020 Chapter President, and 2021 Past President.
You may have seen the photos on the front page of marincamft.org from the 2020 Planning Retreat, like this one. That retreat was one of the last in-person events MCAMFT has held since the pandemic began. 
In my mind, the pasta-and-marshmallow structures team-building exercise has become an analogy for how it’s been for nearly the past two years. Despite the many ways our plans were upended when the pandemic happened, I will never forget how everyone jumped in with enthusiasm, persistence and lots of creativity to meet the challenge: taking sticky, fragile, unwieldy things and attempting to make something that stands tall. Marin CAMFT has weathered so much in the past two years, and thanks to our resiliency and commitment to growth and innovation, we continue to develop in ways that will benefit our members. As you will read in the other Directors’ updates, there are many improvements being made to our programs that add even greater value to your membership.
I want to thank everyone I have had the privilege to work with, too many to mention in this column so here’s to all the people who served on the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 MCAMFT Boards and Committees. A heartfelt thank you to the 2021 Board: Adam Cohen, Pat Saunders, Laurie Buntain, Meri Hayos, and Beth Leib. Also, my deepest gratitude to Dan Neuharth, our 2019 President and 2020 Past President. To the incoming 2022 Board of Directors: Welcome and thank you for your service. We are all so excited by the new energy you are bringing to Marin CAMFT!
My heart is full when I think of all the unforgettable experiences and tremendous connections I have made as a result of this experience. I may be stepping down from leadership of our chapter, but I truly look forward to future connections with the friends and colleagues who make Marin County CAMFT such an outstanding organization.

Farewell from 2021 Secretary and Director of ProgramsWell, the time has come for me to say goodbye to being on the Marin CAMFT Board. I have served for many years and it has been an honor and a privilege. The past two years gave us some of the biggest challenges ever. The pandemic not only made us rethink how we do things but how we do them better than ever – and together we stepped up and never missed a beat. As you know, we don’t accomplish successes alone and I was lucky to have worked with the best team of people ever and am grateful for everything they offered. I want to thank: - The members for voting me in and trusting that I could do the job.
- My colleagues on the Board who supported and encouraged me through two of the most challenging years ever.
- The CEU Team who helped me provide top quality workshops and lectures.
- The exceptional speakers who provided professional trainings and helped our members to continue to grow and be the best therapists possible.
I have loved my time on the Board and the friendships I have made that I will hold in my heart forever. Thanks for the memories.

From Our Membership Director
The 2022 Membership Drive is on - it's time to renew! 2022 promises to be a challenging but great year, and Marin CAMFT membership can help fill your practice needs!
Continuing Education: One of our primary membership benefits is free and discounted continuing education. During 2021, more than 1,100 people participated in our continuing ed programs. We held two opportunities to earn valuable Continuing Education credits throughout most of the year, many of them completely free to our members. Feedback from these programs has consistently been enthusiastic, and we anticipate that 2022 will continue to offer a variety of interesting and helpful educational programs.
Improved Profiles and New Fields in the Marin Therapist Directory: Perhaps a less familiar aspect of our membership benefits is the Marin Therapists Directory. which is publicly available and searchable by therapist attributes. We have been working on the MCAMFT website, and are now able to track the number of hits to the Therapist Directory generally, and are excited to report that this feature is regularly used! Your membership in Marin CAMFT gives you the option for your profile to appear in this directory.
We've also made improvements to make your Therapist Profile more useful to people searching for therapists, with new ways to contact you. Please see the instructions below for updating your profile to take advantage of these new features. New Marin CAMFT Chapter Member Listing: We've had requests from members to publish a list of all of our members again, which we'll be doing this month in electronic form! All Marin CAMFT members who are active and in good standing as of January 31, 2022, will be included in a PDF directory that we will distribute. This resource will be available to you to find referrals within our local community of other therapists. You will be able to print it on your home printer to make notes in it if you like. We hope to be able to generate this listing every year going forward. If you wish to be included in this chapter membership listing, please be sure to renew before January 31st!
Membership Pricing Staying the Same: Again this year, the cost of the yearly Marin CAMFT membership will not increase. It continues to be just $65 for licensed clinical members and other professionals, and free for pre-licensed members. If you work with Associates, trainees, or students, please them know that Marin CAMFT offers FREE membership (provided they are members of State CAMFT) including an internet presence through the Therapist Directory, networking opportunities, continuing education, and FUN! There are so many benefits that make membership worthwhile. In general, new memberships to MCAMFT are set up as auto-renewal; you can easily turn this feature off if you prefer to pay manually or if you would like to let your membership lapse. You can log onto your Marin CAMFT account to see how your current membership is set up and make changes.

Please note, renewals received after January 31st will be charged a $15 late fee. Also, remember that membership in state CAMFT is a requirement for membership in Marin CAMFT.

Instructions for Updating Your Therapist Profile
We have added new fields to your Therapist Profile so that you can present your practice in new ways. These are all optional, not required, and it is up to you how you share yourself with the public. You can also choose not to be listed at all. All of these options can be changed in your online account at marincamft.org. Here's a quick explanation. If you need help, please reach out to Lisa, our Web Editor, or Meri, our Membership Director.
New Profile Fields in the Marin Therapist Directory
1. In the main Membership details section, a Pronouns field now appears beneath your first and last name.
2. In the Office Locations section, indicate if you see clients via Teletherapy and/or In Person. These are important fields for the public to use in finding therapists. Please view the Therapist Directory to see how they work.
3. New Therapist Identities section with these new fields:
- gender
- sexuality
- race/ethnicity
- religion/spirituality/atheism
Again, these fields are all completely optional. It is up to you if you wish to disclose these parts of your identity. If you choose not to disclose them, then your profile will still be displayed in all lists of therapists (unless you have it hidden entirely - see below) however it will not appear after a filter is selected on the Search by Attribute screen.
New "Send Message" feature to receive messages through your profile
Now you can be contacted through your Marin CAMFT profile!
As of January 1, 2022, we have enabled a new feature on the Therapist Directory where a message can be sent to you by a member of the public who is viewing your profile.
An incoming message will be automatically routed to the email address you have on your Marin CAMFT account. By including this feature on therapist profiles, you are now able to hide your email address from your public profile if you wish, which may reduce the number of spam emails you receive. This also gives the public a simple way to reach out to you with their inquiries, by clicking the Send Message button when viewing your profile.
Any messages sent by the public through this Send Message feature will come into your inbox with this tag prepended to the subject line:
"[Contact via marincamft.org]"
That's how you can tell it's an email message sent through your profile. If you do not want the public to be able to contact you in this way, please use the instructions below to turn off the feature.
Please log on and update your Therapist Profile today!
We recommend that every member log on and review the listing in the directory, adding new information to the new fields, and making sure the current fields are accurate.
To edit your Therapist Profile:
- Log in to your account at the MCAMFT website,
- Click on your name in the dark-blue banner at the top right of the screen
- Click the blue Edit Profile button and make your changes
- Or, to view how your profile appears in the directory, click on "My directory profile”
Don't want to appear in the Therapist Directory at all? No problem! To hide your profile from the public, follow the instructions above to edit your profile, then click the Privacy tab, then de-select the "Show profile to others" option. Save your profile. Your profile will not be included in the Therapist Directory.
Don't want to be contacted through your Marin CAMFT profile? It's easy to turn off the Send Message feature! Follow the instructions above to edit your profile, then click Privacy, then on the first row with the option for Send message form, click for No Access. Save your profile.

Marin CAMFT Diversity Committee
Would you like to get involved in organizing Marin CAMFT initiatives to promote diversity and equity in our community of therapists? We hope you'll come to the Annual Planning Retreat on January 8th where suggestions will be discussed with the entire chapter. Then, the Marin CAMFT Diversity Committee is meeting to put these DEI plans into action for our chapter in 2022. This will be on Zoom on Sunday, January 30th at 4pm.
We've moved the Diversity Committee to Sunday afternoon this time, in the hopes that more can attend. We will be exploring ideas for even more culturally aware training and education, initiatives to increase diversity of our membership, speakers we may want to invite, and more. It would be great if you can join us!

Meet the 2021 Kristina M. Carey Scholarship Recipients!
Marin CAMFT is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Kristina M. Carey Scholarships. Each year Marin CAMFT awards a trainee and an associate each with a $1,000 scholarship. Kristina Carey was a Marin CAMFT board member who contributed her creativity, kindness and time to the chapter. Our Scholarship Fund was renamed to honor her legacy in 2017.
For the 2021 awards, the Kristina M. Carey Scholarship interviews were held by Zoom on November 20. The Scholarship Committee members (Suzanne Alfandari, Dorie Rosenberg, and Elaine McMahon) had the honor of interviewing wonderful and thoughtful candidates. Marty Frankel is also on the Scholarship Committee and participated in the recruitment and applicant review process. Marin CAMFT's scholarship winners for 2021 are:
Nicole Duncan is the recipient of the Trainee Scholarship. She has worked with clients through the Community Institute for Psychotherapy (CIP) in San Rafael. She has a very strong background in community service agencies and facilities that focus on both outpatient and inpatient mental health. Nicole is working on her M.A. in counseling psychology through John F. Kennedy University. Strong areas of training interests for her are honoring cultural understanding and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and community, as well as suicide prevention, and social justice.
Mora Ouneklap is the recipient of the Associate Scholarship. She currently works as a counselor at San Rafael High School. Mora grew up in San Rafael and attended San Rafael High School, and reports feeling a true sense of belonging in her community and is drawn to the diverse populations at the school. Earlier clinical work was at College of Marin in academic counseling, which propelled her into furthering her education in mental health. Mora has a strong interest in helping further the understanding of family dynamics, cultural traditions, and social justice. * * *
Thank you to all of our applicants! It was a difficult decision this year. The 2022 Kristina M. Carey Scholarship Application will open in late Summer for those who are interested in applying this year. Community Outreach: Winter Report from the Trauma Response Team
Greetings Everyone,
Happy New Year and Welcome 2022! The Marin CAMFT Trauma Response Team (TRT) is excited for the new year and the new adventures ahead. We have made significant progress in our collaboration efforts with the staff at Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. The goal is to provide skilled mental health volunteers during school crises, critical incidents and larger disasters in Marin as well as other Bay area counties. Under the auspices of the Marin Medical Reserve Corps (MMRC) TRT members will be deployed by county officials as part of the national Medical Reserves Corps program developed after 9/11.
Through our TRT/MMRC collaboration, TRT members will be pre-vetted, receive monthly training, and be the foundation for a larger team of skilled mental health volunteers. To learn more and join this important effort, please reach out to one of the TRT chairs whose contact info is listed below.
Dee Treshnell, who revitalized the Trauma Response Team efforts with Marin CAMFT and lead the School Crisis Team, has stepped back from these roles and will be sincerely missed. Her leadership, experience with schools, and sense of humor gave the team an outstanding foundation. The School Crisis Team serves school districts in Marin when disaster strikes and school counselors are overwhelmed. In her absence, Beth and Kathleen are reaching out to team members and the larger Marin CAMFT community for someone with organizational and school experience to co-chair the TRT School Crisis Team. Please let us know if that is you!
Two mental health news items are important to highlight. First, a National State of Emergency was declared for the mental health of America’s youth and in October 2021, a national state of emergency for the mental health of America’s youth was declared by leading child health care groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Children’s Hospital Association.
Representing more than 77,000 physicians and more than 200 children’s hospitals, this declaration draws attention to the pandemic’s worsening effect on youth’s already significant mental health challenges. “Today’s declaration is an urgent call to policymakers at all levels of government - we must treat this mental health crisis like the emergency it is,” urged Savio Beers, AAP President Dr. Lee.
With Marin County already having one of the highest teen suicide rates in the Bay area, additional attention to youth mental health needs, programs and resources is much needed. What are you observing in your practice? Please come to the next TRT meeting, as we would like to hear from you.
Second, add this phone number to your contacts: Disaster Distress Hotline: 1-800-985-5990 This is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year national hotline dedicated to providing immediate crisis counseling for people who are experiencing emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused disaster. This toll-free, multilingual, and confidential crisis support service is available to all residents in the United States and its territories. Spanish speakers can call the hotline and press “2” for 24/7 bilingual support. Interpretation services are available in over 100 languages.
In addition, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a Disaster app that offers first responders immediate access for any type of traumatic event at every response phase. Download the app and learn more about the hotline at https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/disaster-distress-helpline.
If you’re interested in participating in the TRT, please join our monthly meetings which include speakers and discussions on topics such as disaster mental health, trauma, experiences in the field, and pertinent trainings. Note: Marin CAMFT is rolling out a new process for online payments for Therapy Group ads starting with the Spring 2022 Connections. Instructions for submitting payment will be posted on our Advertising Page on marincamft.org in January. In the interim, please continue to contact TGL Editor Renée Owen with questions on advertising in the Therapy Groups List.
Rates for Text Ads
- Marin CAMFT members: $20 first listing, $10 for each additional listing in the same issue.
- Non-members (including agencies): $25 first listing, $15 each additional listing in the same issue.
Text Ad Specs
- Line 1 - name of group: up to 44 characters
- Line 2 - facilitator, phone number:
up to 44 characters
- Up to 3 more lines - description of group, web and/or email
address, etc: up to 65 characters per line
The character limit includes punctuation and spaces. If too long or doesn’t follow the
existing format, your ad will be edited to fit.
To renew an existing ad with no changes: Please email Renée Owen at reneeowen@sbcglobal.net. Payment instructions for renewing ads will be posted on in the Advertising section of marincamft.org in January.
To submit a new ad:
- Identify the section in which you would like to see your ad. See index of listings above for the categories we currently offer.
- Write your ad according to the Text Ad Specs above.
- Email your ad, including the section you want it in, to reneeowen@sbcglobal.net, with Subject Line of "MCAMFT Grp Tx Ads."
