    DBT for Non-DBT Therapists

    Presented by Marielle Berg, LMFT

    2 CEs available

Free for Marin CAMFT members and reciprocal chapter members!

    Workshop Description

This presentation introduces the DBT model to non-DBT therapists so they can gain a deeper understanding of who DBT is for and how the treatment works, as well as learn some key DBT Skills that can be applied right away.

The difference between comprehensive and DBT-informed therapy will be discussed, helping clinicians understand when and if to refer to comprehensive DBT, when to refer an individual client to a skills training group and when and how to integrate DBT skills into the work they are already doing with clients.

Specific skills from the four skill modules will be taught and workshops participants will gain both an intellectual and experiential understanding of key DBT skills that they can choose to integrate into their clinical work. Come ready to learn and practice skills together as the best way to teach the skills to clients is to use them yourself first.

    Educational Goals

The goal of this workshop is to learn the basic principles of the DBT model and to understand how to utilize specific DBT skills in individual therapy sessions.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

    1. Define the basic assumptions and elements underlying DBT

    2. Define emotional dysregulation, including how systems of power and privilege impact experiences of emotional dysregulation for those with marginalized identities.

    3. Assess which populations benefit most from DBT including how sexism, racism, heterosexism and other oppressive structures influence assessment
    4. Explain the 4 skill sets in DBT: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Distress Tolerance
    5. Apply Interpersonal Effectiveness skills to help clients learn to communicate more effectively in relationships
    6. Apply Mindfulness skills to help clients learn how to be present, rather than lost in the past or worrying about the future
    7. Apply Distress Tolerance skills to help clients learn how to tolerate distressing emotions

Get your BBS-required telehealth training with Marin CAMFT

Telehealth: Law & Ethics, Technology, and Best Practices for Connecting with Your Clients

3 Law & Ethics CEs available

This course is designed to satisfy the requirements of California AB 1759 (Chapter 520, Statutes of 2022) and also qualifies for 3 law and ethics CEs.  The California Board of Behavioral Sciences requires current license holders up for renewal and future applicants for licensure to have completed three hours of training in the provision of mental health services, including law and ethics related to telehealth.

        Workshop Description

In many ways, providing therapy through Zoom or other online options is similar to working with a client in person – except when the technology glitches out, or the client is in crisis. Are you prepared for these situations? This course offers specific guidance on the legal requirements and practical considerations for providing therapy by telehealth in California, including informed consent, assessing appropriateness for telehealth, telehealth across state lines, HIPAA and confidentiality, and documentation. You’ll learn about important safety plans that should be prepared for each client, along with suggestions for implementing a simple technology failure protocol. The focus will be on best practices for two-way video therapy conducted on Zoom or other platforms, though all telehealth modalities will be discussed.

        Educational Goals

This course covers the California laws for delivery of telehealth by LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs, and LEPs, along with ethical requirements established by professional associations including CAMFT, ACA, etc., with a focus on client safety and unique considerations for clinical care via telehealth.

        Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this morning presentation, participants will be able to:
        1. Assess a prospective client for suitability for therapy via telehealth.
        2. Identify 3 requirements in California law for documenting telehealth sessions with clients.
        3. Name 3 components of a client telehealth safety plan.
        4. Explain when telehealth is permitted across state lines and describe how a California therapist should assess legality of providing telehealth to a specific client in a specific state before providing care.
        5. Describe 2 ways that telehealth may increase equity in mental health for marginalized populations and support social justice.
        6. Apply an ethical decision-making model to common scenarios that uniquely arise in the provision of telehealth.

        Presenter Lisa Wenninger

Lisa Wenninger, LPCC, BC-TMHLisa Wenninger, MA, MBA, NCC, LPCC, BC-TMH (she/her) is a doctoral candidate in Counselor Education & Supervision at Antioch University, with a research focus on antiracist skills in counseling, and coursework and experience in teaching teletherapy skills to counseling students. She is a CCE Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider and received the 2022 CCE Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider training award by the NBCC Foundation. Lisa has an MBA from Columbia and extensive experience in technology from a 20-year career in software development before becoming a therapist. Lisa is a California LPCC and a National Certified Counselor. Lisa's clinical website is https://theworkiswithin.com

Attendance for the entirety of the Zoom event and completion of the course evaluation afterwards will qualify for 3.0 Law & Ethics Continuing Education hours.

Note: If you attended this telehealth training by this presenter before, you are welcome to retake it however based on BBS rules you would not be able to claim the CEs for it again within the same license renewal period. However, if you attended a different telehealth training from a different presenter, then you're invited to take this training which would count towards your law and ethics requirements and the standard CE requirements. This curriculum is updated from the original content presented, to account for changes in telehealth laws as of 2024.

Depth workshop to gain perspectives for supporting elder clients

From Aging to Eldering: Helping Clients with their Fear of Aging

Presented by Nader Shabahangi, Ph.D., MFT

        Saturday, June 22nd 10:00am to 3:30pm

        4 CEs available

        Workshop Description

Drawing upon the philosophical roots, literature, and practices of humanistic psychology and philosophy, as well as the latest research in gerontology, participants will reflect on their own beliefs and fears of aging and their ideas of adulthood and elderhood, in the context of working with clients in this population.

Participants will be invited to explore their personal identities and work interactively in groups and dyads toward developing new identity constructions and frameworks for conceptualizing aging, meaning, and purpose for clients in old age.

This new perspective potentially nourishes personal well-being, enlarges the context of psychotherapy practice, and contributes to the health of each person’s inner and outer world.

        Educational Goals

This workshop presents concepts and practices for treating clients through the perspective that moving away from the dominant decline narrative of aging, to a fuller understanding aging as eldering, creates a new attitude that welcomes aging as the maturation, deepening and development of each human being.

        Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

        1. Describe the principle goals of eldership in the practice of psychotherapy.

        2. Explain about the history and ways in which the humanistic movement dovetails with the emergence of a new eldership concept.
        3. Describe of the concept of “eldering” as relevant to both personal health and well-being, and to psychotherapy practice.
        4. Apply skills through an eldership view of a human being’s life with oneself and with one’s clients.
        5. Name the individual and societal health implications of eldering and eldership, of a nonhierarchical, systemic view of humans in relationship with other forms of planetary life.
        6. Describe the concept of neurodiversity as a way to conceptualize different attitudes to life and the influence of culture on the way we understand aging and elders.

        Presenter Dr. Nader Shabahangi

Nader Shabahangi, PhDNader Shabahangi, PhD., MFT, Nader received his training as an existential-humanistic therapist from Jim Bugental, a pioneer in existential humanistic thought and practice. He co-founded the Existential Humanistic Institute in 1997 to train therapists in an existential-humanistic approach to helping clients. At the same time, he embarked on becoming a diplomate in ProcessWork and began an innovative humanistic training program for beginning therapists working in eldercare communities. In 2003, Nader founded Eldership Academy which further focused his interest in working with elders and explores the meaning of our aging process as an inward journey connecting us to our inner nature or soul.

His current project is to re-conceptualize eldercare from a custodial model to a spiritual approach he calls Elder Ashram. He is a licensed psychotherapist in California. His love for the humanities, philosophy and psychology, earned him his doctorate from Stanford University.
