PRESENTATION
Alcohol and drug use plays an integral part in the development of a myriad of psychological disorders and medical diseases, as well as impeding their successful treatment. Mental health care professionals working with clients on seemingly unrelated problems often must ferret out the role of substance use and abuse during the course of therapy. Similarly, while health care professionals working in rehab centers or emergency departments are familiar with the substance abuser, the impact of substance use goes far beyond these specialties into medical-surgical floors, maternity units, even pediatrics departments. Health care professionals can powerfully and positively affect their clients by recognizing problematic substance use, forming an alliance with clients that enables the exploration of the role chemicals play in their mental and physical health, and finding acceptable ways to challenge previously unquestioned beliefs.
Knowing that many health care professionals are aware of the basics of addiction issues, Dr. Timmen Cermak will take the topic to a higher level, deepening our understanding of the complexities of addiction and improving our ability to successfully treat disorders that threaten lives and destroy families.
Objectives
Upon satisfaction of the course, the health professional will be able to:
- Explain the chronic disease model of addiction to a patient or client in ways that a) reduce shame; b) recruit him or her in the recovery process
- Employ the concept of “dysregulation” in evaluating a child’s risk of later developing substance dependence
- Use motivational interviewing more than confrontation around substance dependence
- Construct contracts, including drug testing, with adolescent drug users
- Understand and explain the role of “tools of recovery” in insight-oriented psychotherapy
THE PRESENTER
Timmen L. Cermak, M.D., is the President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine. In that role, his focus is on turning the addiction field’s attention toward early diagnosis and treatment of addictive disease, since most adults treated show signs and symptoms during their adolescence. Dr. Cermak is also on the Advisory Board and served as a founder and past Chairman of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. From 1997-2006, he served as the Medical Director and Psychiatric Consultant to the Henry Ohlhoff Program in San Francisco, California. Currently practicing psychiatry and addiction psychiatry in San Francisco and Marin County, he has published multiple articles and titles on the topics of addiction and its effects on others, including the books Marijuana: What’s a Parent to Believe?; A Time to Heal; and Evaluating and Treating Adult Children of Alcoholics.
Dr. Cermak is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Addiction Psychiatry.
